| The Paradox of Our TimesThe paradox of our time in history is that
we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider freeways but narrower viewpoints.
We spend more, but have less. We buy more, but enjoy it less.
We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time;
We have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness.
We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little,
drive too fast, get too angry too quickly, stay up too late, get up too tired,
read too seldom, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.
We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.
We've learned how to make a living, but not a life.
We've added years to life, not life to years.
We've been all the way to the moon and back,
but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor.
We've conquered outer space, but not inner space.
We've done larger things, but not better things.
We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.
We've split the atom, but not our prejudice.
We've learned to rush, but not to wait.
We plan more, but accomplish less.
We write more, but learn less.
We build more computers
to hold more information
to produce more copies than ever,
but have less communication.
These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion;
tall men, and short character; steep profits, and shallow relationships.
These are the times of world peace, but domestic warfare;
more leisure, but less fun; more kinds of food, but less nutrition.
These are days of two incomes, but more divorce;
of fancier houses, but broken homes.
These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throw-away morality,
one-night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do
everything from cheer to quiet, to kill.
It is a time when there is much in the show window
and nothing in the stockroom;
a time when technology can bring this letter to you,
and a time when you can choose either to share this insight,
or to just hit delete. The Paradox of our times by George Carlin | | |

| WAR what is it good forWhy does everyone complain about the government? How screwed up the government is. How inefficient the government is. How the government can't fix any problem maybe just reduce it. Inefficiency and ineffectiveness is the predominant thought process that runs through everyone's mind when it comes to the topic of politics. Killing is wrong. I don't think any rational person would argue that. Every culture has killing and murder rightfully as their top evil. The most extreme and harshest punishments across every culture predominantly are reserved for those that commit the crime of murder. Murder is the worst crime someone can commit. Young people are in large part immature. When it comes to teenagers and those in the early twenties the most typical judgement is that they are still learning and growing and at the very least are not as refined or knowledgable in the world. Look at all the positions of power in the world CEOs, Presidents, Prime Ministers, shit even Dictators right down to the most basic management positions you'd be hard pressed to find someone even in the early thirties doing those. Anyway let me get to the point: Why is it socially acceptable to put young people who are not old enough to drink or gamble (under 21) in a position where they are in a foreign country armed with automatic weapons an give them the right to kill another human being? What gives the government a right to do this? when we all know in our hearts that governments are very imperfect to put it lightly. So as citizens we sit around and do nothing letting a system we (most people I'd assume) don't trust (federal government) put kids in a postition where they can legally kill without conseqence. To put it blunty kids are dumb, Killing is wrong in any circumstance, and the Government is deaf and blind on how to run this smoothly. Let we all let this prehistoric system kill and murder with the money we earn in the name of our freedom for companies we buy products of as they take our rights away more and more each day cause we can't be trusted????? No government should have the authority to kill or put someone to death. No government in the same breath should be able to send the youngest most impressionable people (not to mention poorest) anywhere else with the authority to kill another. (Don't tell me that six months to twelve months of training is preperation to let a human being kill another. This is the year 2008 for fuck sake why is it still a shoot first ask questions later mentality. Why do we still need warning labels on lawn mowers that say do not put fingers underneath where the blade is. Has everyone gone insane? You know just because war and killing has always been the way doesn't make it right or something we should fall on so easily. Maybe I am a pussy and a hippie and any other insert putdown for antiwar here. I just want to know why people are so ingrained with the notion that was is justified. Why does the media portray people that ask for even the small amounts of accountabilty as crazed wackos that hate America. Ingrates if you will. I love America I feel fortunate and grateful for having being born in unquestionably the greatest country in the world. It saddens me so much how our government and our fellow citizens are being maimed and killed for a cause that is so questionable even by the medias own biased opinion(war is good news). They never show the bad side of war the dead bodies the mutilated people, the dead innocents. No they only show you the buzzwords (Operation Iraqi Freedom, anyone remember Mission Accomplished) they de-humanize war. It is death and destruction and chaos for all involved. Maybe war is necessary but before I decide this before anyone decides this and just takes the word of their boss, of the tv or especially of any govenment shouldn't this question first be looked at? So I ask you is War really necessary? is it just? Is their another way? | | |
